Step 7 – Have an Organized Approach to TOEFL Speaking

The seventh step to successfully pass the TOEFL iBT Exam is learning competent speaking skills: decoding the speaking task, organizing a coherent response including a topic statement, delivering rich details in the body of the speech, and ending with a conclusion. Despite your preparedness, you will have difficulty on the speaking section, but, if you have completed all the prior steps to this “7 Step Program to Pass the TOEFL iBT Exam!” you will have the vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening, and reading proficiencies that will be crucial elements in helping you to score high in TOEFL iBT speaking. Additionally, after having taken the writing lessons, you will have the organizational skills that you can transfer to your speaking proficiencies.

“What is this lesson about?”

TOEFL Speaking Lesson 5 focuses on speaking integrated task 4: reading, listening, speaking, academic.  By watching three videos, you will learn all about how to get a high score on this type of speaking task.

“Three Videos? How much instruction is that? What Is the Purpose of Each Video?”

In total, you will get 44 minutes of TOEFL integrated speaking instruction from me, Michael Buckhoff, co-founder and materials writer for Better TOEFL Scores, Composition and Linguistics Professor, TOEFL Specialist, ESL Master Instructor, and Placement and Testing Coordinator for California State University, San Bernardino. I have been teaching TOEFL since 1994 and will be delighted to share my knowledge with you.

Video 1: In this 17 minute video, you will learn what this type of speaking task is, how it is graded, and how you should organize your speech so that you get the highest possible score. You will also see a sample speaking task, sample notes, a sample response, and a discussion of why the response will get a high score.

Video 2: In this 21 minute video, you see another sample for this speaking task, this time with the emphasis on how the response complies with ETS rubrics for the TOEFL iBT integrated speaking tasks. I will go through the speech line by line showing how it will be evaluated by TOEFL iBT human raters who will use the following rubric: http://www.nafsa3.org/conferences/regional2009/sessions/tues/pruner%20integrspehd-t2.pdf

In other words, I will show why the sample response will score high in terms of the scoring standards used by ETS: general description, delivery, language use, and topic development.

Video 3: Now that you have had some focused instruction on how to organize TOEFL iBT integrated speaking task 4: reading listening, speaking (academic), it is time for you to practice giving a response. In fact, you can record your speaking response directly on the same web page as your lesson. To do this, you will need a microphone and the latest version of adobe flash which will allow you to make a video or audio comment after watching the video. Finally, you will also be given a chance to see some sample notes from the reading passage and the lecture for comparison purposes.
